IIRC EU markets now mandate the USB-C charger for devices (which is not a bad thing, too many throwaway custom chargers....). Adding the port, the USB-C PD circuitry may take up too much room. I think this approach would require some kind of custom charging cradle (probably usb-c connected..). Is having a custom usb-c adapter to charge a device allowed under the rules?
I think the "dock" itself could be USB C easily, it would probably also significantly reduce the cost of the dock.

You don't need PD circuitry for this. 5V 500mA over USB2 is more than enough. But the actual port and battery charging circuit is a bit ridiculous at this size.
I'm not sure precisely what the EU rules are, but the requirement should really depend on the dimensions/power of the device.
TIL getting an elevator tech to just come out to look at your building's elevator is about $1600. If it's an easy fix, that's all you need to pay. If it's not, it goes up significantly....
I'm not going to claim that elevator malpractice isn't possible, but no elevator is designed with a single point of failure for any safety critical system, so I don't think it's easy or likely to make a mistake that would cause a safety issue.

IIRC infotainment systems are already showing ads in some form. And location + driving performance is being captured + monetized and shared with insurance companies.
Unless this results in an EV car that I can rent for less than $100/mo, this really needs to be stopped.
tinc (https://tinc-vpn.org/), a OSS mesh vpn that has existed for a long, long time, is another great solution with no central server. You can manage the public key distribution yourself, or just keep them checked into a git repo (my preferred solution), and it's been solid for years.
Yes. There are good solutions out there. I just build rayfish because I want truly decentralized networks.
My thought process is more like: what if you have your job's network and your gaming network? if you use tailscale you need to log off of one, log into the other. Still, you have centralized coordination servers and so on.
With rayfish we also discard the ACL architecture and use network separation + per-device firewalls. So it is also trustless. In some way

Yes, tailscale, rayfish, zerotier and all use an existing network of relays to do nat traversal. Tinc doesn't provide that, but allows you to be completely independent if you get (or already have) a $5 VPS.
Not necessarily. That's one way to do it, but e.g. OsmAnd just has big region-shaped files and not a load of tiny square tiles like a web viewer has that loads the data piecemeal
Even if it only had RX-only RF capabilities, that means that is a vector for an inbound wireless attack. At the very least, the kind of places that restrict wireless devices probably do not want any pictures or other artifacts to exist tagged with precise location metadata.
